Maiden's Bridge – Ura e Vashës

“Ura e Vashës” (Maiden’s Bridge), a cherished gem of Albanian history and culture, gracefully spans the Mat River between the villages of Klos and Guri i Bardhë. It was once the sole means of crossing the river’s upper reaches, connecting the two banks and facilitating communication between isolated communities.
This remarkable bridge features a single, elegant arch with a distinctive discharge window on the right side, adding to its uniqueness. It rests upon the slopes of Mount Vërrith and Mount Dish, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding natural landscape.
Measuring 11 meters in length, the bridge’s span between the two supporting legs is 7 meters, and its arch rises 7 meters above the river’s surface. The bridge itself is 2.8 meters wide, paved with stones and tiles, while the semi-circular arch is crafted from meticulously hewn and squared limestone. It is further reinforced with two vaults and iron hooks on either side of the arch.
Built in the 1700s, the bridge carries with it a poignant legend. It is said to have been constructed by a young girl, known locally as “Vasha,” who sacrificed her youth and wealth to build the structure. In a time when communication between the two villages was nearly impossible, Vasha, unable to visit the boy she loved, took it upon herself to build the bridge, overcoming the isolation that separated her from him. Her dedication to love and connection is immortalized in the enduring beauty of “Ura e Vashës.”
