The Skërfica Tunnel

A landmark project representing a significant milestone in Albania’s modern infrastructure development

The Skërfica Tunnel, a landmark project by Gjoka Konstruksion, represents a significant milestone in Albania’s modern infrastructure development. This ambitious undertaking was conceived as a strategic solution to traverse the Skërfica mountain, creating an essential transportation link that will enhance mobility and foster economic growth in the surrounding region.

The construction of the Skërfica Tunnel involved the integration of state-of-the-art technology and a highly detailed approach to overcoming engineering challenges. By blending traditional techniques with modern construction methods, our team successfully navigated complex geological obstacles, resulting in a stable, safe, and long-lasting structure.

A key aspect of the Skërfica Tunnel project is its commitment to environmental sustainability. Throughout the planning and construction phases, careful attention was given to preserving the natural landscape and minimizing the environmental impact. The use of eco-friendly materials and construction methods was prioritized to ensure minimal disruption to the local ecosystem.

The Skërfica Tunnel stands as a testament to the power of engineering and technology in overcoming substantial challenges, while delivering significant benefits to both local communities and the economy. In addition to improving regional mobility and safety, the tunnel has unlocked new opportunities for growth, tourism, and collaboration.

Lot 7 of the Kardhiq-Delvinë road, which passes through the Skerficë Pass, is strategically located between Lot 4 and Lot 6. This segment is a newly designed roadway, built to the C2 standard, and consists of 1.3 km of tunnel and 1.2 km of connecting road. The tunnel itself includes the main two-lane vehicle gallery, with the parallel emergency and service tunnel gallery situated approximately 28 meters away. The 700-meter-long emergency tunnel connects to the main tunnel at its midpoint.

The completion of the Kardhiq-Delvinë road and the Skërfica Tunnel marks the realization of a critical route for tourism development along Albania’s southern coastline. This road reduces travel time to Saranda by 45 minutes, enhances safety, and showcases the region’s stunning natural landscape.

Construction of the tunnel began in April 2021 and was completed in June 2022, two months ahead of schedule. The project now serves as a vital connection between Gjirokastër, Tepelenë, and Saranda, significantly improving access and regional connectivity.
